The present paper reports the functions and the processes of development of an elaborate system, named HICASS, the core being the veritable data base. This data base which conforms to a particular application is constructed on the basis of a set of routines common to the individual data bases. The applicational systems that have already been started are; Hydrostatics; Hull structure design; for example, decks, shell, bulkheads, transverses, longitudinals etc., this data is transferred successively to the NC system. Piping design; for example, positioning joints, breaking down into unit pieces, making piece drawings, generating NC bending data etc. The storage, addition, correction, alteration or deletion of data is carried out by issuing a special command corresponding to the designer's intention. Hardware configuration is given in chapter 3, the hardware is selected out of ready-made products that seem to be fit for the respective end. Views in regard to the future effectiveness of this system are put forth in chapter 6.
