Pinus Thunbergii usually branches only at the terminal point of annual shoots. Branching, however, has been observed within the single growing season's shoots on more than ten plants of P. Thunbergii, during about one hour walking through forest land. Imediate growth of winter bud initials seems to be a reasonable explanation of the phenomenon, and it is supposed that some genetic factor or factors are working upon it. The same phenomenon can be observed also in P. densiflora.
