    Treatment of waste water from a shochu distillery with a flocculent yeast was studied. The filtration rate was improved when waste water added with a flocculent yeast Hansenula anomala J-224 at a yeast concentration 1×109cells/ml as incubated under occasional agitation at pH 4.2 and 25°C for 1 hour (contact treatment). Effects of flocculent character of H. anomala J-224 on filtration were investigated by using flocculent, non-flocculent mutants, and cells in which floc forming ability as eliminated by heating at 100°C for 5 min or treatment with proteinase K. It was suggested that the flocculent character of strain J-224 was essential to improve the filtration property. A filtration rate of 2.8 kg/m2.hr was obtained after the contact treatment by a filter press with 0.5% cotton fiber filter aid, the rate being about 3 times that of non-treated waste water. In addition, water content of filter cake was decreased to 64.3% by this treatment from the value of 79% with non-treated waste water.
