摘要：A presente pesquisa ancora-se nos pressupostos de que o sentido do texto é construído pelo leitor e para que isso ocorra, é necessária a ativação de vários conhecimentos, dentre eles o domínio de mecanismos coesivos (KOCH, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008; MARCUSCHI, 2008).Dessa forma, o artigo objetiva ilustrar de forma prática como os conhecimentos de coesão textual auxiliam na compreensão de textos em língua inglesa como língua estrangeira.Para isso, foi demonstrado um procedimento metodológico, ancorado na literatura supracitada, para uma possível compreensão de uma notícia extraída do jornal “ The New York Times ”.Por meio de uma abordagem de leitura instrumental (TODA, 2010), tal procedimento comprovou que a construção de sentido (compreensão) do texto foi possível graças à ativação de vários conhecimentos a respeito estratégias de leitura, incluindo o conhecimento acerca de coesão textual.
其他摘要：This research is based on the assumptions that the meaning of the text is constructed by the reader and for this to happen, it is required the activation of several skills, including the mastery of cohesive mechanisms (HALLIDAY; HASAN, 1976; KOCH, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2008; MARCUSCHI, 2008). Thus, the paper aims at illustrating in a practical way how the knowledge of reading strategies (instrumental reading), especially, cohesion mechanisms helps the comprehension of texts in English as a foreign language. For that purpose, it was selected some news taken from the newspaper “The New York Times.” Under this perspective, through an instrumental reading approach (TODA, 2010), this procedure proved that the construction of meaning (comprehension) of the text was possible thanks to the activation of several skills about reading strategies, including the knowledge of text cohesion.
