摘要:This article analyses the processes of representation and perception of the Pacific Ocean landscape as derived from the narrative of the voyage by Gemelli Carreri (1698) on board of the Manila Galleon. The article also introduces the concept «Sailscape» as the practical and symbolic construction of the oceanic environment and as part of the navigation and geographical imagination. The theoretical analysis of the Pacific «sailscape» has been illustrated by means of Gemelli’s text. In addition to that, the navigator’s scope and the ship’s trip have been regarded as spatial agents in the construction of the landscape.
