摘要:The objective of this paper is to find out the stage on the conventional treatment of wastewater in which it is more convenient the application of gamma radiation for removing toxic chemicals and coliform bacteria. Samples with different degree of contamination from primary and biological treatment were irradiated with 10 different doses between 6 to 37 kCy (using Cobalt-60 at a dose rate of 25 kCy/h). Doses between 6 to 10 kCy reduced the population of coliform bacteria up to 5 orders of magnitude. It was not possible to find a specific dose of radiation to remove phenols, but they were best eliminated when their concentration were between 7 to 20 mg/L. The detergents were significatively reduced with doses between 20 to 30 kCy when their concentration were between 3 to 4 mg/L. It is worth mention that reduction of phenols and detergents were higher for samples irradiated after biological treatment than for samples irradiated after primary treatment. However, the reduction of coliform bacteria was on the same order of magnitude in both cases.
