  • 摘要:The Seco river is part of the Jamapa basin in the state of Veracruz. This river originates from the melting waters of the highest peak in Mexico, the Pico de Orizaba. On its way to the Gulf of Mexico the river is polluted by point and nonpoint sources. The aim of this study was to relate the watersheds with the municipal administrative boundaries, identify the main potential pollution sources and assess the water quality of the river. A geographic information system (GIS) was used to integrate geographic and demographic information with the sampling points. In the last decade the population in the catchment area (55 545 ha) has increased 18 %, reaching 240 000 inhabitants in 2010. Urban areas, where 70 % of the population lives, were identified as the main point sources of pollution whereas rural areas contribute as non point sources. The sugarcane fields and its associated industries are potential sources of environmental degradation. During the rainy season the Seco river was heavily polluted, exceeding its self-purification capacity.
