摘要:Participation of the waste pickers in the recovery of recyclable materials is part of waste management in developing countries like Mexico. Despite the importance of these groups in the waste recovery system, there are few studies on this sector. This paper identifies and contrast the working conditions of waste pickers in the recovery of recyclable materials in the disposal stage. The study was conducted in Baja California in two rural areas, San Quintín and Vicente Guerrero, and an urban area, the city of Mexicali. A questionnaire was applied to the pickers to know details of their activity. This included five categories: market, income, product sales, working conditions and organization. The results show differences in the activity carried out by waste pickers in urban areas compared to rural. In relation to income, those which secrete in urban areas earn up to 58 % compared to the rural waste pickers. The current working conditions of waste pickers are badly damaged as a result of intermediate structures and the hostile environment.
