Prospective memory is involved in many human everyday activities, the simplest as the most complex. This diversity is reflected in the involvement of various cognitive processes when recalling intentions. Specifically, if under certain circumstances the retrieval of an intention may occur on an automatic mode, in other situations, controlled processes are required. The aim of this review is to present the main theories developed in order to explain these different mechanisms. First, theories based on an attentional monitoring deployed for the recall of event-based and time-based intentions are presented. Then, explanatory theories of the automatic and spontaneous retrieval of intentions will be reported. Finally, this review will focus on two theories integrating the two previous views. Firstly, the multiprocess theory proposes the involvement of automatic or controlled processes in function of characteristics of the task. Secondly, the dynamic view of multiprocess incorporates dynamism and contextual variability that lead to a better understanding of everyday prospective memory.
