摘要：¿En qué medida la tasa de participación enuna elección primaria explica tanto la vota-ción por el candidato ganador como la parti-cipación en la elección general? Las primariasde la Concertación en Chile en 1999 tuvie-ron un efecto positivo en la votación de Ricar-do Lagos en la elección presidencial posterior.La participación electoral en las primarias tam-bién tuvo un efecto positivo sobre la partici-pación en la contienda presidencial. Hubotambién una relación positiva entre la vota-ción por el candidato PDC en las primarias yel apoyo al candidato de la Concertación en laelección presidencial. Después de discutir losefectos de las primarias en los procesos de se-lección de candidatos, analizamos el contextode las primarias de 1993 y de 1999. Mostra-mos, con datos por comunas, dicho efectopositivo. Finalmente, discutimos lasimplicaciones que pudiera tener la celebra-ción de primarias en los resultados electoralesde esa coalición política en la elección general.
其他摘要：AbstractTo what extent, the turnout level in a primaryelection explains turnout in the subsequent ge-neral election and on the vote for the winningcandidate in the primary? There was a positiveeffect of the presidential primary held by the“Concertación” in Chile in 1999 on the vote forRicardo Lagos in that year’s presidentialelection. There was also a positive effect ofprimary turnout on general election turnout in1999 and a positive relationship between thevote for the losing candidate in the primary andthe opposition candidate in the general election.After analyzing the theory on the effect ofprimaries on the candidate selection process,we summarize the prior history of primaries inChile. With communal level data, we assessthe effect of primary turnout and electoralsupport for the winning candidate on the votethe coalition candidate in the general election.We finish by discussing the implications thatholding primaries might have on the generalelection vote share for that coalition.
