摘要:The paper presents the detailed characteristics of ideas of the well-known polymath that was active in the late 17th to the early 18th centuries, Semyon Ulianovich Remezov, about mystical Siberian identity and the special role of Tobolsk as a religious and political centre. The origins of these ideas related to the legitimation of the Russian conquest of the Siberian Khanate are revealed through a historical review. The specific features of the map of Siberia compiled by Semyon U. Remezov, as well as the commentary to it, allowed for concluding that Siberia was considered as a Universe, with Tobolsk being perceived as a new Jerusalem. This understanding is confirmed by the analysis of the text and illustrations of the Remezov Chronicles and by that of the characteristics of Remezov’s architectural projects as well as of his activities as to the reconstruction of Tobolsk Fortress and the building of Tobolsk Kremlin. As a result, the integrated study of the heritage and works by S.U. Remezov helps support the conclusion that the main theme line of his activities was the idea of Tobolsk being a centre of not only Siberia but of the whole of the Universe, along with his pursuit to establish this image in the chronicles, cartography, and architectural structures.
