摘要：The existence of reference service in an academic library has long been in operation, as long as the library itself. However, compared to its equal public service of circulation, this service is less used by the users. This is because they might not understand how to use it and the purpose of its existence. In this article, the author emphasizes the importance of reference service in academic library and introduces its role in providing the service to the users. In this information era, especially, the role of reference service is becoming more important than ever with the development of internet and digital library. As such, the reference librarian should meet certain standard of qualification.
