摘要：The coming of the new techniques in cataracts surgery has revolutionized ophthalmologic surgery in the world and in our country; Sancti Spíritus has not been exempt. In the year 2002 extra capsular surgery of the crystalline lens with implant of the intraocular lens began to be developed. A descriptive retrospective study was made with longitudinal projection in the phthalmology consultation; from January 1st to December 31st, 2009 with the objective of describing the behaviour of the technique. The population was integrated by 600 patients and the sample by 237 older than 60 years that fulfilled the discriminating criteria. The results showed that the patients prevailing were males between 75 and 79 years, being hypertension and diabetes mellitus the most frequent general illnesses, and glaucoma and macular degeneration the associated ocular illnesses. The most frequent complications were the operculum and the opacity of the posterior capsule. With this study it was determined that elder patients in Cabaiguán have a high prevalence of suffering from cataracts, requiring immediate intervention because this pathology causes reversible blindness. Inclusion criteria: 60 years old or elder cataracts surgery patients from both sexes, in which extra capsular surgery of the crystalline lens, with implant of the intraocular lens or not, was used. Exclusion criteria: Younger than 60 years old surgery patients in which other techniques were used.
