摘要:Introduction: Caffeine is an ergogenic aid used in order to improve athletic performance due to possible intracellular effects on central and peripheral system, slowing the perception of fatigue and optimizing the cardiovascular, endocrine, muscular and nervous systems during exercise. Objective: This study aimed to investigate whether caffeine exerts influence on the yield of triathletes in the race of 5000 meters. Materials and methods: Nine male triathletes aged between 18 and 35 years were tested twice running 5000 meters, interspersed with a mean period of 7 days. In one test they consumed a capsule containing caffeine anhydrous (5mg/kg) and in the other containing maltdextrin as a placebo in a double blind design study. The test time was measured and blood samples were collected for measurement of glucose and lactate before and immediately after each test. Results: No significant differences (p>0.05) were observed in lactate and glucose values between tests with ingestion of caffeine and placebo. However, the average time for the test was significantly lower (p=0,002) after caffeine consumption. Discussion: Although, this is a relatively short distance, there was improvement in performance time after caffeine consumption. However, this improvement was not due to effects on the production of energy. More studies are needed to determine the physiological factors that underlie such an effect on performance. Conclusion: Caffeine worked as ergogenic resource and resulted in improved aerobic performance time of triathletes in the 5000 meters run. Key words: Ergogenic aid, Triathletes, Lactic acid, Glucose.
