摘要：Many challenges exist in IP-based networks – which today, constitutes milestone in the convergence of information and communication technology. VoIP (Voice over Internet protocol) is a transport protocol that encapsulates voice/media data as transported over data network via IP technologies. VoIP/IP telephony is a wide range of apps and multi-service technologies that allows integration of data, voice and video solutions onto a converged network infrastructure via use of hardware, software and open-source apps/protocols (H.323, Megaco/H.248 signaling and transport protocols) used to control and manage both data, voice and video sessions. The selected area is Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku, in which VoIP is implemented and its issues discussed namely: delay/latency, packet loss and jitters. Jitters and Packet loss are a function of bandwidth, which can be increased when necessary (if numbers exceeds the capability of the said bandwidth); while latency can be minimized but not totally eradicated by checking the network speed and upgrading network equipment in terms of speed of such equipment like the Media server, application server etc. The many benefits of IP communications cannot be over-emphasized as it includes advanced dial tone, rich media streaming, unified messaging, IP contact center etc while providing the advantages such as resilience, economy, flexibility, mobility and productivity for users. However its many pending issues and challenges, IP communications (with respect to VOIP and IP telephony) continues to proffer advancements in mobile computing, apps to support mobile users and telecommuting apps that provides users the much needed merits with soft-phones, soft agents and VPN services. It is thus recommended that the ICT unit of any organization wishing to harness the full potentials of VoIP and IP telephony should constantly be updated on the Multi-Switch Forum (MSF) – in a bid to help them improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their VoIP implementation.
