摘要:Film genres which were defined and developed by Hollywood during the early decades of the 20th century are no longer the same: a hundred years after they were first born, they are undergoing profound changes and a thorough revision. As a result, new sub-genres are emerging and others that were once essential to the identity of film as a mass phenomenon are becoming blurred. One such film genre on the verge of extinction is the musical. This paper briefly traces out the way musicals developed, from their beginnings through to the early years of the 21st century, enabling the keys to their success and their decline to be identified. Some major productions, with outstanding soundtracks or choreography building an interaction between the leading roles, will be especially examined.
