摘要:The modern university or large college is characterised by diversified internal a nd external constituencies which differ in terms of goals, values and strategies of having things done. This makes it a n arena of power and conflict or an orga nise d anar chy. This paper a rgue s that conflict is a n inevitable phenomenon in a ny univer sity / college since it is the nature of universities to breed conflict. Admittedly conflict is often unplea sant but one should not overlook its cr eative potentia l. When conflic t occurs, le aders in tertia ry e du cation have at the ir disposa l a number of conflict mana gement strate gies to employ so as to restore normalcy to their institu tions. Since no one particular strategy can c laim to offer solutions to all conflict situa tions, this pa per a dvocates the use of multiple stra te gies in c onflic t management. These include bu t ar e not limited to the win-lose, win-win a nd co ntinge nc y a pproa ch to conflict ma na gement. How ever , in pra ctice, ma na gers in higher edu ca tion tend to a chieve more or gan iz a tiona l effe ctivene ss by blending e le men ts of ea c h stra teg y in c onflic t r esolution depe nding o n the circumstances surrounding ea ch situa tion. This pa per seeks to explore conflict management strategies as well as challenges tha t lea der s in institutions of higher education fac e in trying to ma na ge conflic t.
