摘要:T he study sought to esta blish post-gradua te students' experiences with rega rds to research supervision in South Afr ica . A pu rposive sa mple of 32 (11 male and 21 female), pa rt-time M aste r of Educa tion stude nts register ed for their disse rta tion a t a South Africa n University, participated in the study. A qualitative de sign w as employed in this study. An open- ended questionnaire wa s used to collect the data . Data were analyse d thematically. Pa rticipants identified good and bad supervision e xperie nces. T he study found that students viewed good resea rch su pe rvision experience s a s hinging ar ound the persona lity/chara cteristics of the supervisor. T he study found that good supervision e xperiences were assoc iated with know ledge able, friendly, supportive , ava ila ble, time conscious, infor ma tive a nd pa tie nt supervisors. On the other hand, the study fou nd tha t ba d supervision experie nces included supervisor not always ava ilable, not receiving research guidelines, delayed feedback, continuous change of instructions, harassment by supervisor, supervisor losing student's work and receiving 'feedback' without supervisor comments. Partic ipa nts believe d tha t resear ch supervision would be impr ove d if: super visor s rece ived tra ining in rese arc h su pe rvision; all supervisors employed a guiding attitu de ; the u niversity adopted a common resea rch super vision guide line; student a nd supervisor met/commu nica ted regular ly; stude nts chose their own supervisors a nd if the university could ha ve regular postgraduate re sea rch relate d semina rs.
