摘要：T he hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Sou th Africa helped people to rea lise that the game of soccer can ena ble people fr om va rious ba ckgrounds to share their ha ppiness together irrespe ctive of rac e, colour, creed, gender, ethnic group or country of origin. The world event was a symbol and engineer of socia l cohesion that ca me after the violent xe nophobic a tta cks on immigr ants from Afr ica n countries in 2008. Due to the p ost-world cup fear of xenophobia, a n esta te a gent warned a cosmopolita n group of tenants in a residentia l comp lex to gua rd a gainst c hildren who made noise a s they pla yed together. T he wa rning prompted this ca se study in whic h we investiga ted how founda tion pha se lea rners (Gra de R -3) at one desegregated 1 school coped with the racia l, ethnic, social and cultura l diversity that characterise their school life. Purposive a nd convenience sampling were employed to se lec t fou nda tion phase tea chers a nd their lea rners for the ca se study. Resear ch instruments comp rised child informal pla y observations; focus gr oup inter views for teachers, a nd childre n's dr awings a nd pla y co nver sations. Results of the study revea led that young children do not build social ba rriers in their diverse play and peer groups. From the results, we conclu de that desegre ga te d sc hools can be a venues for socia l cohesion in post-x enophobic South African communities a nd recommend that higher educa tion institutions include handling of diverse or globa l classrooms a s one of the contemporary issues for the tea cher tra ining c urricu lum.
