  • 摘要:Mentoring is a n intentiona l instructional improvement str ategy whic h, in most cases is mutual. It is one of the strategies used to support and develop new a cademics in their work. This study sought to explore the fa ctor s tha t a ffe cte d the de ve lopment a nd impleme nta tion of a sta ff pee r-mentor ing pr ogramme for jun ior a nd senior academics at an institution of higher lea rning in South Africa. The study focused on a peer mentoring project funded by an outside body where junior a cademic members of staff desiring assistance in developing their resea rch capacity in order to complete higher degrees and increase research output teamed up with experienced members of staff a s mentees. T his wa s a mixed methods resear ch where both qualitative and qua ntita tive data was collected through questionnaires with semi structured and open-ended questions. The findings of the study showed an impact of mentoring on prepa ring the next genera tion of resea rchers. T he grea test impact could be seen in the completion of further degrees, presenting papers at conferences a nd refining the papers for publica tion T he stu dy rec ommends greater funding for the mentoring role, workload relief for mentors and training sta ff to become effective mentors as this would provide a n effective but cheaper form of staff development,
