摘要:T he proc ess of tea ching and lea rning involves the a ssessment of students in or de r to monitor the extent to which the intended ou tcomes and objective s ar e achieved. A ssessment a sc ertains the extent to whic h edu ca tiona l le ar ning ou tcome s a re a chiev ed and how studen ts master the con cepts ta ught. In this pape r the researchers interrogate the issue of assessment. The resea rchers begin by exploring litera ture on assessme nt a s it relates to highe r e du cation. Key c onc epts a nd principles of a ssessment a re discussed and a distinction be twee n assessment of lea rning and assessment for learning is clarifie d. This is followed by a contextual disc ussion on the national assessment policy frameworks in the South Africa n higher education system including how these influence decisions on a ssessment pra ctices in the u niversitie s. The re sea rcher s conclu de that ac ademics a nd e duca tiona l developers should embrace a broa d understanding of the issues of curriculum development a nd implementation and policies governing assessment so that va rious approa ches a nd stra tegies in assessment for the good of educational progra mmes a nd student a tta inment.
