摘要:Tea ching a nd learning in universities should embrac e latest philosophies. T hese philosophies ha ve moved away from the transmission models of instruction to transformative models. T his discussion pap er located in the socia l construc tivist a pproac hes to le arning a rgues that though the lecture method r emains in te gral a s a method of tea ching in the university, it r equir es to be tra nsformed throu gh the inc lusion of a ctive le ar ning strategies within the lecture set up. The use of a ctive lea rning stra tegies is discussed in the context of la rge cla ss te aching in the South Afric an higher education c ontext. T he resea rchers conclude tha t active learning should be imbedded in the le ctu re set-u p a nd recommend the staff de ve lopment of lecturer s in the university thr ou gh the institutionaliz ation of aca demic development progra mmes to assist lectur ers in enhancing tea ching. L ecture rs without tea ching qua lifications are encoura ged to enroll for such courses in order to be fully equip ped with skills that e nhance their pra ctice .
