摘要:T he physica l envir onment of the c la ssroom is a n imp orta nt de ter min ant of lea r ner 's c omfort possibly a ffecting his work performance a nd mental efficiency. The present study was conducted with the objective to study the indoor climate of selec ted Indian cla ssrooms a nd the ir subjective assessment by the fema le student popula tion. A tota l sample of 10 colleges wa s selected for this study. Two classrooms from each college, making a tota l of 20 classrooms were selected. Five users from ea ch classroom were ta ken making a total of 100 users for the subjective assessment of various comfort pa rameters and subjective assessment was also made by self observa tion of these pa rameters. T he study wa s c onducted with the help of an intervie w sche dule. An envir onmenta l kit w as used to measur e va rious environme nta l pa rame ter s of the selec ted classr ooms.T he indoor comfort le vel in the se lected cla ssrooms was not a ppropria te a s de sir able for effective lear ning. The classrooms were either too wa rm or too cold. The temperature was not conducive for studies. The lighting was also not sufficient in intensity in the classr ooms to fa cilita te ea sy reading and writing without e ye pa in and str ain. Classr ooms we re not c ompletely isola ted from ea ch other. The mean sc ore s for subjec tive assessment of wind speed, tempera tu re in su mmer s a nd winters, humidity, lighting and noise level were 1.55 , 1.41, 1.47, 1.89, 2.1 4, 1.49 and 2.16 respectively.
