摘要:School violence is a reality a nd it is increasing at a n alarming ra te around the globe in the 21 s t century. T he va st ma jority of schools have been transforme d into battle grounds in whic h the safety of lea rner s is not gua ra ntee d. Schools ar e supposed to be safe pla ce s where a ll lea rner s have equ al a cce ss to equa l e du cationa l opportunities and a re trea te d equ ally. T his pa per a ims to inve stigate fac tor s that contribute to sch ools being violent institutional role models. A qualitative inquiry was used in the study. Da ta were collected using individual inte rviews w ith sc hool principa ls a nd foc us-gr oup inter vie ws with lea rne rs. The stu dy w as conducted in tw o provinc es in South Africa , namely, Ga uteng a nd N orth West. Four schools in the two provinces were de libera tely selec ted to pa rticipate in the study. This study found that when le arners report ca ses of violenc e in the school, either their tea chers or their school principal often dismiss them. T he study a lso disc overe d that the school does not cha llenge unequal power relationships found in wider society but instead reproduces them. T he study concludes by proposing stra tegies tha t could enha nce safety in sc hools to a llow for effective tea ching a nd le ar ning taking pla ce
