摘要:Resear ch is a critica l c omponent in the cu rriculum for post-gra dua te stu dents. T he mentee s ar e a ssigned supervisors for gu ida nc e. T he present study sought to investiga te the exper iences of mentors for post- graduate students undertaking research. T he resea rch design w as a survey. Purposive sampling wa s used to select five mentors. Semi-str uctured interviews were conduc ted with the participa nts. The study found that the ma jority of the mentors did not receive training on how to supervise postgra duate rese arch students. The mentors r eported that their mentees were not pro-active, lacked knowledge, la cked English expressive skills, poorly referenced their work, su bmitted unedited w or k and u sed outdated sou rces. T he y indicated tha t mentoring postgra dua te students enha nced their resea rch sk ills, resulted in joint publication of a rticle s, positive relationship with mente es a nd sha ring of experienc es. T he departments and faculties need to adequately prepare mentors to effectively supervise postgr aduate resea rch stu de nts.
