  • 摘要:While South Africa has adopted the policy of inclu sive education, the resear che rs' interaction with tea chers and school managers suggested that schools face many barriers in this regard. This paper seeks to examine the state of inc lusivity in one South Africa n prima ry school from the point of vie w of the school pr incipa l's ex perie nce s of inclu sion there in. T he re se a rc hers pur posively selec te d the sc hool on tw o ba ses na mel y the presence of le arne rs with specia l lea rning needs there in and its a ccessibility to them. The princ ipa l expresse d willingness to sha re his experiences w ith the researc he rs. Through a c ase study r esea rch de sign, the resea rchers condu cted a two-pa rt semi-structured interview with the principal. In the first part they investigated the school's biographica l information to do with inclusivity. The second part involved the pr incipal's perspectives on how the school fared rega rding a ddressing barriers to achieving inclusivity. The main findings include that the principal felt the school wa s not coping with impleme nting the inclusive educa tion policy. H e bla med education auth orities for lack of support, and major barriers included lack of qualified sta ff, unsuitable infrastructure and a dearth of relevant equipment. T he resea rche rs conclude tha t a ll changes in a school will succeed or fa il depending on the qua lity of le adership therein, hence the focu s on the principal. T he resea rchers foreground the a sset based app roach as a n ideal lens through which to consider how a school ca n address its own c ha llenges.
