摘要:Starting with Terman, human psychometr ic intelligence has long been considered the key variable when studying giftedness and talent. For most of the 20 th century, IQ tests were highly regarded when the goal was to identify children with outstanding potential for achievement. In recent years, however, intelligence (general cognitive ability = g) has lost its central role in modern accounts of giftedness. We posit here that the relegation to a minor role of the trait intelligence in conceptions of giftedness is not justified in view of the enormo us progress and achievements of intelligence research in the past 20 years, which, however, seem rarely taken note of in modern giftedness literature. For example, it has been shown that there is no other single psychological trait in psychology that contributes more than g to the understanding as well as to the prediction of human achievements. This holds true also when contrasting the contribution of g versus other traits (personality, motivation and interests). We review this research showing that psychometr ic g is not only the single most powerful and most universal predictor of achievement in many domains but it is also increasingly well understood in terms of etiology, experimental cognitive analysis and the underlying neurophysiological substrate
