摘要：La categoría de espacio ha migrado de las ciencias físicas hacia las ciencias de la sociedad y la cultura, en las cuales ha estimulado estudios y debates que abren nuevas posibilidades para comprender la espacialidad de las actividades humanas, así como las relaciones entre el espacio, el tiempo, y la historia. La categoría de espacio se refiere simultáneamente a la materialidad objetiva y la temporalidad abstracta, así como a la dimensión subjetiva de la experiencia. Este ensayo presenta la distribución del espacio que resultó del asentamiento de la United Fruit Company en la costa pacífica de Costa Rica, y analiza los patrones de comunicación social y la estructura jerárquica de los flujos de tránsito humano dentro de la ciudadela y del complejo residencial, acentuando los mecanismos de exclusión y segregación entre las tres zonas en que se dividió el asentamiento. El autor se basa en la teoría del espacio de Michel Foucault, su noción del panóptico y diferentes visiones del espacio concentracionario.
其他摘要：The category of space has migrated from the physical sciences into the sciences of society and culture, where it has stimulated studies and debates that open new possibilities to understand the spatiality of human activities, as well as the relationships between space, time, and history. The category "space" refers simultaneously to objective materiality and abstract temporality and at the same time to the subjective dimension of experience. This paper presents the distribution of space as it resulted from the settlement of the United Fruit Company on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, and analyzes the patterns of social communication and the hierarchical structure of human transit flows within the village and residential complex stressing the mechanisms of exclusion and segregation between the three zones in which the settlement was divided. The author builds on Michel Foucault's theory of space, his notion of panopticum, and different views on concentrationary spaces.
