摘要：Este artículo analiza el proceso de modernización que vive la ciudad de Cartagena y los imaginarios de ciudad que se presentan en el contexto de la celebración del centenario de la independencia, el 11 de noviembre de 1911. Así mismo se presenta como el proceso de modernización impulsado por las elites de la ciudad privilegió los aspectos estéticos y monumentales sobre otros de desarrollo material que revestían importancia para satisfacer las necesidades básicas que tenía la mayoría de la población cartagenera, y como este hecho llevó a que muchos sectores sociales rechazaran este imaginario sobre el desarrollo de la ciudad.
其他摘要：This article discusses the modernization process facing the city of Cartagena and the imaginaries of city shown in the context of the celebration of the independence's centennial on November 11, 1911. Also, it is exposed how the modernization process -led by the elites of the city- has favored the aesthetic and monumental aspects over other aspects of material development which were of vital importance to meet the basic needs that had the majority of the population of Cartagena and the way this fact led many social sectors to reject this imaginary on the development of the city.
