摘要:In an inuential study, Mas and Moretti (2009) nd that \worker eortis positively related to the productivity of workers who see him, but notworkers who do not see him". They interpret this as evidence that so-cial pressure can reduce free riding. In this paper we report an attempt toreproduce the ndings of Mas and Moretti in a lab experiment. Lab exper-iments have the advantage that they can shut down alternative channelsthrough which workers can inuence the productivity of colleagues whomthey observe. Although we nd evidence of peer eects in our experiment,we nd no evidence that these were consistently positive in the mannersuggested by Mas and Moretti. Instead, our results imply that peer eectswere heterogeneous, with some workers reciprocating a fast co-worker butothers taking the opportunity to free ride. This suggests that their ndingsare less generalizable than has been assumed.
