摘要:The main purpose of this small scale research is to investigate the effect of different readingpurposes on inference generation while reading poetry. Four MA students were divided into two groups andread two poems in Portuguese, with distinct purposes (study and entertainment) in mind. Participantsexpressed their thoughts during the reading through the use of a pause protocol. Data were analyzed andinferences were categorized according to Narvaez et al.’s (1999) Inference Categorization Model. Resultsshowed that the total amount of inferences generated was not significantly influenced by the reading purpose.However, the amount and kind of inferences varied among the two reading situations proposed
