摘要:The birthday of the U.S. Army oc- curred on June 14, 1775, but more than a century later, the year 1898 de- serves to be known as one of rebirth. That year, the sinking of the battleship USS Maine in the harbor at Havana, Cuba, galvanized popular demand for an Army capable of affecting world af- fairs. The 28,000-man Regular Army grew with an influ x of thousands of volunteers, state militias and Civil War veterans to a fluctuating and indeter- minate size through the conquests of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the counterin- surgency campaign in the Philippines. Those years established both the Army and Navy as internationall y signifi- cant and the United States as a global power.
