摘要:Even in this ahistori cal era, most Americans stil l know that June 6 is the anniversary of D-Day. A solid majority recalls that D-Day marked the inva- sion of France in World War II. The Germans, British and French were in the mix, but mai nly the Americans, right. Actually, the British landed more troops, but we be- lieve differently, thanks to movies and TV shows like Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, maybe even an old black-and- white gem such as The Longest Day. Start asking about the year it happened, which country was on which side, or ex- actly where the landings occurred, and you may well get the penguin salute. The details get a bit fuzzy when you get your history lessons from Call of Duty. But the basics seem pretty clear: We came; we saw; we won.
