摘要:As a young lieutenant at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, I often saw a pop- ular poster emblazoned with the stir- ring words These Colo rs Never Run. Many of us put that on our cars as a bumper sticker. With the bravado of you th, we thought it was cool. Deep down, we didn't really expect to find ourselves in the back of beyond, hunkered in a tiny combat out- post, staring up at a universe of tracer fire with the enemy bear- ing down on us. But as a wise old colonel once told me, "You stay in this Army long enough, son, and things change."
