摘要:Though the literary genres and the periods of writing of the works in which they appear greatly differ, there might be some reasons for comparing the characters of Caliban and Gollum. They are both fish-like slimy monsters and bear a somewhat similar relationship to their respective masters. Both resentful for having been deprived by these of what they consider as their property, the island or the precious ring, they attempt to murder them.Surprisingly enough, Prospero and Frodo express some pity for those rather unreliable servants and finally acknowledge them as their own, as if in some ways they revealed the dark sides of their personalities.Even if Shakespeare and Tolkien claimed they did not mean to deliver any kind of message, but aimed at entertaining their audience or readers, the quest for power stands as a major theme in either work.In that respect, some discrepancies can still be noticed between Caliban and Gollum as well as between their masters. The two monsters are the instruments of evil, but have different origins : the former is a witch's son, the latter was born in a respectable hobbit-like family, before turning into a thief and murderer.Besides, Prospero's mastery over his slave as over the other characters and the island sharply contrasts with Frodo's uncertain and possibly fruitless quest, just as The Tempest's happy end can be pitted against Frodo's rather nostalgic flight away from Middle-Earth.
