摘要:The problems of synesthesia and its particular occurrence, “the color hearing”, are discussed in the paper. Beginning Isaac Newton, many attempts to establish visual equivalents for sounds were based on assumed universality of color-sound correspondence. The failure of such attempts may be accounted for by mechanistic nature of the assumptions. New ideas about the nature of color-sound correspondences were set forth by B.M. Teplov and S.N. Belyaeva-Ekzemplyarskaya, who stressed the emotional meaning forming the background of “colorful” perception of isolated tones or timbres by outstanding composers (A.N. Skryabin, N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov, B.V. Asafiev). An experimental study supporting the idea of ambiguity of color-sound correspondence is discussed. Considering her earlier findings, the author substantiates the idea of non-specificity of color-sound matching processes that are based on the estimation of emotional meaning of pieces of music and corresponding colors.
