摘要：The article presents some controversial provisions related to the problem of level sensitive characteristics of self-esteem and their consequences. The focus is on two issues: what is self-esteem and self-evaluation process and what are personal and behavioral consequences of different levels of self-esteem. The results of empirical research that contradict the widely held view of definite positiveness of the high self-esteem are analyzed. The features of the relationship between various parameters of self-esteem and behavior are discussed; the genuine and defensive self-esteem are differentiated, the features of optimal self-esteem are discussed. The complexity and ambiguity of explanatory models of optimal self-esteem are demonstrated.
