摘要:S ome occupations take a heav ier toll on workers' bodies than others. For example, a product ion-line worker's back endures considerably more stress than t hat of an office worker in an ergonomic chair. Such differences in act ivities at work over a career culminate in striking differences in disability outcomes for older A mericans. A group of occupations representing about one-t hird of the labor force has t wice the risk of disability that others have. People in these occupations are demog raphically different f rom t he rest of the popu lation. They also earn less and save less t han ot her people do. These differ- ences should not be overlooked in discussing the merits of Social Secu rity Disability Insur- ance (SSDI), a public insurance program that is designed to provide income to those unable to work
