摘要:Background: Adolescence is a phase of transition from childhood to adulthood. There is a need to focus on adolescent well-being in India which has the world’s largest adolescent population. Aim: The present study aimed to understand how Indian adolescents and teachers perceive issues relevant to adolescent well-being. Method: Study participants were students and teachers from urban Indian private and government schools. Qualitative data was collected from 900 students aged 10 – 15 years (M = 12.41, SD = 1.19, 56.6 % boys &43.4% girls) in both Hindi and English (as per linguistic proficiency of respondents) using a semi-structured interview schedule. 17 teachers were individually interviewed about adolescent related problems and interventions. Recurring themes were identified and percentage of responses in each category was calculated. Results: Majority of participants associated school primarily with academics and mentioned studies as a problem for which they needed help. Adolescents reported enjoyment with friends as their favourite aspect of school life. The influence of peers emerged as a prominent factor in enhancing as well as disturbing participants’ well-being. Adolescents sought less academic pressure, more time for leisure, better discipline and infrastructural facilities in school. While many expressed satisfactions with the existing state of their home environment, an equal number of responses sought better interaction with the family. In terms of policy level changes, participants suggested better facilities and reduction in corruption. Conclusion: These findings can facilitate the design of mental health and wellness initiatives which are in tune with adolescent’s perspectives and needs.
