    A string topology is an essential component in underwater acoustic networks. In this paper, we analyze its per- formance in underwater environment. The theoretical results are analyzed with numerical simulations. Additionally, we have conducted three recent sea experiments to measure its performance with different protocol combinations. The results reveal that the network performance is insufficient with a real time system in ocean environments. By investigating the measured data more carefully, we have found two root causes of the performance: long transmission time delay and significant signal overhead of the acoustic modem.
