摘要:Background: The shortage of Saudi physicians was one of the reasons behind the establishment of the large number of governmental and private medical schools during the last 15 years in Saudi Arabia. Reasons for students choosing the medical profession were not thoroughly investigated. Objectives: To explore the reasons for choosing medicine as a profession by junior medical students in both governmental and private medical schools and the factors affecting and helping in choosing their future subspecialties were also investigated. Subjects and Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was carried out at the King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Faculty of Medicine (FOM) and at one of the private medical school in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, during the year of 2014-2015 using a self-administered questionnaire distributed to all second-year medical students in both schools. Results: Willingness to help the patients (74.5%) and interest in medicine (63.7%) were the common reasons for selecting the medical profession by the junior medical students in both the KAU-FOM and the private medical school.
