摘要:Rotula aquatica (R.aquatica) Lour belonging to Borage family, commonly called as Pashanabheda (P aashana-stone, bheda-breaking) is a branched aromatic shrub found growing along the sandy and rocky beds throughout India. It's a sixth controversial drug used for treatment of urolithiasis-kidney stones. It's scientifically proven that the plant possesses antiurolithiatic, antimitotic, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and psychoactive property etc. However, the efficacy of the successive aqueous extract, as an antibacterial agent has not been scientifically investigated. Synthetic preservatives used as antibacterial and antioxidant pose a high risk of cancer, allergic reactions etc. Hence, in the present study, the antibacterial activity of the aqueous extract Rotula aquatica was carried out against both Gram +ve and Gram -ve organisms by cup plate technique. METHODOLOGY: The dried roots of R. aquatica were extracted by successive solvent extraction using solvents in the increasing order of polarity. The phytochemical screening of aqueous extract showed the presence of alkaloids, phytosterols- triterpenoids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins and phenolic compounds and reducing sugars. RESULTS: Among the organisms- Gram +ve - Bacillus cereus and Gram -ve Salmonella abony, Klebsella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found to be susceptible to aqueous extract. The antibacterial activity increased in a dose dependent manner at 250, 500, 750μg. MIC was found to be 200μg/ml for Bacillus cereus, 300μg/ml for Salmonella abony, and Klebsella pneumoniae, 400μg/ml for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. As the plant possesses significant antibacterial property, they could find a potential application in pharmaceutical and food industries as a supplement for treatment of urolithiasis, Urinary tract infections and also as a natural preservative
