Ameiurus melas (Rafinesque, 1820) is an invasive species, which came to Slovakia in the second half of the nineties through Bodrog basin probably from Hungary, where it was imported from Italy in the eighties. Black bullhead has properties which make it well suited to conditions in new settled habitats (particularly wide foodrange, high capacity of reproduction and parental care) and probably contribute to its invasive spread in North America and Europe. In 2007 we examined a total of 40 specimens of Black bullhead females from four sites in eastern Slovakia in order to determine absolute, relative fecundity and fertility index. Obtained data we compared with the authors results from the natural areal of A. melas and new settled habitats. To determine fertility we used the gravimetric method. The average absolute fecundity of Ameiurus melas ranged from 4472 to 9171 eggs. Our results indicate that black bullhead has a higher average relative and absolute fertility as was published in available scientific studies.
