摘要：Over the last years the system of higher education in Bulgaria has found itself in a rather unfavourable environment. This environment has been formed as a result of a number of factors, many of them being of an objective character for the national edu- cation field. What matters is, above all, the processes of globalization and Europeani- zation resulting in effects such as the opening of the educational systems of various states; the free movement of indidviduals seeking educational services across Europe and across the world and other. These processes, along with the effect of factors spe- cific for Bulgaria, such as the decline in birth rate and a drop in the total number of secondary school leavers, cause the educational system and in particular the institu- tions of higher education to face problems of new character. For this reason universi- ties in this country find themselves in a new and highly competitive environment that European universities have long been familiar with. This requires from the higher ed- ucation institution to seek successful alternatives for its development.
