  • 摘要:Purpose - This article aims to introduce the Hungarian food production, food industry before and after the crisis, as well as potential opportunities for agriculture.Research methodology – The research was implemented on the analyses of scientific literature, and I analysed and compared statistical data.Findings The Hungarian agriculture and food industry have serious operating and competitiveness problems. These problems are extremely complex and often amplify each other. The inadequate competitiveness can be traced back to the following underlying problems: the deficiency of funds in the sector, excessive indebtedness, the expensive credits and loans compared to the profitability of the sector, and the very low level of expenditure on research and development. Besides, capital is scared away by the continuously changing and unforeseeable economic and legal environment. The most important question about the future of the food industry is whether it will remain as a primarily basic material producing industry or will it be able to evolve into a sector that is capable of producing goods with higher added value.Research limitations/implications – In this paper I analyse the development of the Hungarian agriculture since the EU accession, the development of the most important animal population, the number and division of Hungarian farms according to size, the agricultural labour utilisation. Then I evaluate the development of the Hungarian food industry, then, the state of the food industry within agribusiness. Finally, I analyse the challenges of the agriculture and food industry.Practical implications – One of the key factors of showing the way out of the crisis is to draft the future prospects and strategies that are based on the results of sciences. However, we can attain results only if – with the presence of human capital – we use innovations that provide living in the long run.Originality/Value – The theoretical concept developed in this study, and the conclusions drawn from empirical research provide extended understanding of the crucial question: how can we solve the food problem in the future?
