摘要:The paper aims at exploring the possibilities for enhancing the active listening skill in educational environment. It states the importance of social skills, especially communicative skills, for the development of a positive school culture. Croatian National Curricular Framework recognises listening as a receptive communicative skill. The sensory activity of listening remains passive if it is not accompanied by cognitive activity. Active listening is a conscious cognitive attempt of understanding the speaker. Understanding should not be reduced to content only, but should also include understanding of the underlying emotions and needs expressed. The authors discuss the benefits of active listening for both teachers and students, but also point out the obstacles to active listening in schools. Furthermore, recent research studies that have proved that it is possible to teach and learn active listening are presented. Certain strategies for improving listening skills in students and teachers are suggested.
