摘要:Most rural communities in Anambra state experience shortages in water supply relative to demand. In those communities where t here are scarcity of surface water such as streams, rivers, lakes etc. the problem is much more felt than in other areas. Two Local government areas (LGAs) that fall into what can be classified as water scarce region of the State are Aguata and Anaocha. Th e aim of this paper is, therefore, to examine the degree of this scarcity in these two LGAs, identify the relevant factors manifesting (revealing) the shortages and discuss implications for rural development. In carrying out the research, questionnaire wer e designed and utilized. A questionnaire survey of 400 households in the two LGAs was conducted from June to December 2012 and a total of 19 socio - economic and physical factors were isolated from the respondents for analysis. The major statistical techniqu e adopted for data analysis was Principal Component Analysis (PCA) that enabled us to delineate underlying factorsrevealing the water supply shortages in the areas. The implications of the shortages for rural development which includes increasing afflictio n of the populace by water borne diseases, poor development o f wet industries, high rate of primary school dropout, frequent death of children as a result of water related accidents, etc. were discussed, It was concluded that the remaining work on ongoing regional water supply schemes in the LGAs be urgently completed to improve water supply
