摘要:External input dependent Green Revolution alarm bells have been ringing for a decade or more. Thesoils & farmers of India are dying, the agriculture is becoming increasingly destabilized and farmer’s suicides aremounting from the prosperous Punjab to where not. The path-finding World Agriculture report released by the UNsponsoredInternational Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology to development(IAAKSTD/ IAASTD) in April 2008 has suggested a natural resource management based ecologically sustainableagriculture to mitigate the adverse effects of a nearly 31% contribution to anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG)emission by present day industrial agriculture and associated land use changes. Organic farming, in spite of thereduction in crop productivity by 9.2%, provided higher net profit to farmers by 22.0% compared to conventionalfarming. This was mainly due to the availability of premium price (20–40%) for the certified organic produce andreduction in the cost of cultivation by 11.7%.The effective alternatives like organic farming, non-conventional energywith rural innovations development programmes in association with rural institutions has a promising future of selfreliance and sustainability.
