  • 摘要:Friction stir welding is the solid state joining technique developed at The Welding Institute (TWI) in1991. The process was first used at NASA to weld the lightweight external tank for space applications. The currentfocus of Friction stir welding process is to extend to the new materials which are difficult to weld using conventionalfusion welding techniques. The main focus of Friction stir process was on aluminium based alloys and composites.Many researchers have investigated this technology for other alloys and materials such as stainless steels, magnesium,titanium and copper. Compared with other processes, friction stir processing has the advantage of reducing distortionand defects in materials. In this review the process parameters, geometry of tool, microstructure evolution andmechanical properties of aluminium alloys and Al based metal matrix composites have been discussed. The focus ofthis paper is the comprehensive review of work the researchers has been done.
