摘要:This substantial (and expensive) monograph is a revision of DanielLynwood Smith’s doctoral dissertation at the University of NotreDame under the direction of the distinguished New Testamentscholar Professor (now Emeritus) David E. Aune, whom Smith credits withdrawing his attention to the need for further research on the multiple uses ofinterrupted speech in Luke-Acts (, ), rather than on the much-studiedspeeches. Smith presents his research in five main chapters. Chapters –examine background evidence in ancient historiography and novels, which isthen used to shed light on the interruptions in Luke and Acts discussed inchapters –. Four appendices allow readers to consult occurrences of interruptedspeech corresponding to the main chapters of analysis. Along with thewell-documented bibliography, readers can seek further detailed informationvia the indexes of ancient sources, modern authors, and subjects.
